What's the Best Thread Count for Bamboo Sheets?

Date: Author: Mehrene Sachedina

When it comes to bedding, thread count is often seen as the ultimate measure of sheet quality. But with bamboo sheets, that’s not necessarily the case.

While thread count can be helpful, it doesn’t tell the full story of what makes high quality bedding durable, comfortable, and luxuriously soft.

Why a High Thread Count Isn’t Everything

Thread count refers to the number of horizontal threads and vertical threads woven into one square inch of fabric. While it was once a reliable indicator of quality, modern manufacturing techniques now allow brands to inflate thread count using multi-ply yarns—twisting lower-quality fibers together and counting them multiple times.

The result is often a heavier, less breathable fabric that doesn’t perform as well for everyday. In other words, a higher number doesn’t always mean better quality.

Does Thread Count Matter for Bamboo Sheets?

Not in the same way it does for cotton sheets.

Bamboo viscose fibers are naturally smooth, which means they don’t require a dense weave to feel premium. In fact, increasing thread count too much can reduce airflow, working against one of bamboo’s biggest advantages: breathability.

This is what makes bamboo one of the best sheets for naturally temperature regulating comfort.

Its moisture-wicking properties and more open weave help regulate heat and manage night sweats, supporting deeper, more comfortable sleep.

Exceptionally high thread counts—particularly above 800—are often driven more by marketing than meaningful performance benefits, and may be less practical for everyday use.

The Ideal Thread Count for Bamboo

So, what’s the ideal thread count?

For most sleepers, the sweet spot is a 250–350 thread count. This range helps maintain a balanced sleep environment, offering softness, breathability, and durability without trapping heat.

Within this range, bamboo sheets typically offer the best combination of performance:

  • Naturally breathable and cooling, releasing excess heat
  • Buttery soft thanks to smooth bamboo fibers
  • Naturally hypoallergenic and gentle on skin and hair
  • Durable without feeling heavy or dense

Below 250, the fabric may feel thinner or less refined. Above 400, you may start to lose some of the cooling benefits bamboo is known for.

If you come across bamboo sheets above 600 thread count, it’s worth taking a closer look. These are often achieved through multi-ply construction or blended fabrics, which can compromise airflow and overall performance.

When evaluating better quality bedding, thread count should always be considered alongside other factors—not in isolation.

What Actually Matters (Beyond Thread Count)

Thread count is only one part of the equation when choosing better quality sheets. The fabric type, weave, and finishing processes often have a greater impact on how sheets feel and perform.

Weave

The weave influences both comfort and durability:

  • Sateen weave: Smooth, silky, and cool to the touch with a subtle sheen
  • Percale weave: Lightweight and breathable with a crisp, matte feel
  • Twill weave: More textured and durable, but less soft against the skin

Fiber Quality

Stronger bamboo fibers help prevent pilling and extend the lifespan of your bedding. Higher quality fibers maintain a smoother surface over time, even after repeated washing.

Finish

Finishing processes refine texture and softness. Methods like pressing (rather than aggressively stripping fibers) help maintain durability while preserving a silky-smooth feel.

Sustainability

Not all bamboo bedding is created equally. Look for responsibly sourced materials and trusted certifications like OEKO-TEX®, which ensure fabrics are free from harmful chemicals and safe for everyday use.

Why We Chose 300 Thread Count

When designing our Iced Bamboo Cooling Sheets, we chose a 300 thread count—right in the optimal range for airflow, softness, and long-term durability.

But performance goes far beyond the number.

We pair that thread count with:

  • A smooth sateen weave for a cool-to-the-touch feel
  • High-quality bamboo viscose for strength and softness
  • A pressed finish that helps maintain a luxuriously soft, silky surface over time

The result is a luxury sheet set designed to help maintain a balanced sleep environment—cool, comfortable, and consistently soft night after night.
