Bamboo Rayon vs Bamboo Viscose: What’s the Difference?

Bamboo Rayon vs Bamboo Viscose: What’s the Difference?

Date: Author: Mehrene Sachedina

If you’ve been shopping for bamboo bed sheets, pajamas, or other bamboo-based fabrics, you’ve probably come across the terms “bamboo rayon” and “bamboo viscose”.

They might sound like different materials, but they’re actually the same fabric. Both come from bamboo cellulose and go through a similar process to create that soft, silky feel that makes bamboo so popular. In this post, we’ll break down what these terms actually mean, how bamboo fabrics are made, and what to keep in mind when picking your next set of bamboo bedding or loungewear.

What Is Rayon Bamboo?

“Rayon” is a semi-synthetic material made from plant extract that is generated into soft fibers. Rayon can be made from different plant sources, including bamboo, wood pulp, and cotton linters. When that extract comes specifically from bamboo pulp, the fabric may be labeled “rayon from bamboo.”

What Is Viscose Bamboo?

Like rayon, viscose is a fabric made from plant cellulose—but just like rayon, it doesn’t always contain bamboo. Make sure to check that a label says “bamboo viscose” or “viscose bamboo,” to ensure it’s actually made from bamboo.

So What's the Difference?

In practice, there’s very little difference. Both are made from plant fibers and go through very similar processes, giving them a soft, silky feel that’s often compared to silk, but without the high price or environmental impact. You might even see the term “viscose rayon,” which is just another way to describe fabric made from plant cellulose, and it’s commonly used on bamboo fabrics.

So why do two different names exist for the same material? It’s mostly historical. Rayon was coined in the United States, where it’s still the more common term, while viscose is used more widely around the world. That’s why rayon fabrics are often produced in the US, while viscose fabrics may come from other countries.

Does the Percentage of Bamboo Matter?

Absolutely. Some products mix bamboo with cotton or other fibers to lower costs. While these blends are usually more affordable, they don’t feel the same as pure bamboo. 100% bamboo fabrics contain longer fibers that resist pilling and feel gentle on your skin and hair. It’s important to always check the label: if it says “100% viscose bamboo” or “100% rayon bamboo,” you’re getting pure bamboo. Anything less is likely a blend, which compromises some of the smoothness, durability, and eco-friendly benefits that make bamboo so desirable.

Are 100% Bamboo Sheets Worth it?

The short answer: yes, it’s one of the best choices for bedding, far superior to blends or other fabrics. Why?

Protection:

Bamboo fibers are naturally long, which creates an ultra-smooth surface that resists pilling. Less friction also means your skin and hair stay happier while you sleep. Blended fabrics, which mix bamboo with cotton or other fibers, don’t deliver the same silky feel or protective benefits.

Sustainability:

Bamboo is also highly sustainable. It uses minimal water, grows without pesticides or fertilizers, and regenerates naturally from its roots. Compared to cotton, bamboo:

  • Uses only a third of the water.
  • Reaches maturity in about half the time.
  • Protects soil from erosion rather than depleting it.
  • Produces more oxygen than an equivalent area of forest.

Because of this, choosing pure bamboo sheets is better for the planet than blends with cotton, polyester, or other materials.

Antibacterial Properties:

Bamboo also has natural antimicrobial and moisture-wicking properties, keeping sheets clean, dry, and fresh throughout the night. This means pure bamboo sheets can often be washed less frequently than cotton or blended sheets, saving water, energy, and time.
