If you search, “How much does a good mattress cost,” you’ll find a wide range of prices: anywhere from a couple hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. The price of the mattress will depend on a wide variety of factors, including the size of the mattress, the quality of the materials, where the mattress was made, and more.
With this in mind, it may be difficult to get a sense of how much to expect your next mattress to cost. That’s why we created this guide! In this article, we’re going to break down different types of mattresses into several categories and show you the average mattress price in each category, to help you find the right mattress for you and your budget.
At a glance:
Average Mattress Cost by Type
Here, we’re going to look at the average costs of the four main types of mattresses: innerspring, all-foam, latex, and hybrid. In each category, we’ll give you a general price range, and we’ll also tell you the average cost of a twin mattress compared to a queen mattress within that category.
Innerspring mattresses typically cost between $500 and $1,200, depending on the size of the mattress and the quality of the materials used to make it. A twin innerspring mattress might be around $600, whereas the average cost of a queen innerspring mattress is about $1,050.
The innerspring mattress is one of the most affordable options. It’s also the oldest mattress design of the four we’re listing here, dating back to the 19th century, and the most common type of mattress on the market. Also known as metal spring mattresses or coil mattresses, these are generally what most people picture when they hear the word “mattress.”
Innerspring mattresses have a layer of interconnected metal coils, usually made of steel. This is what gives them their springy feel: They’ll have a bit of resistance when you push down. They tend to be durable and long-lasting, but because the springs are interconnected, they can’t isolate motion. This means movement on any part of the mattress will be felt everywhere.
Because this is one of the most common types of mattress, you’ll have a wide variety of options if this is the style you choose. Some use higher-quality materials, and you can expect to pay a little more for those. By contrast, a very low-quality mattress will be much cheaper, but it also won’t last as long or be as comfortable.
Mattresses made entirely out of foam, i.e. all-foam mattresses, generally cost between $250 and $1,200. The average cost of a twin all-foam mattress is about $500, whereas a queen-size mattress in this category will be around $1,050.
Though all-foam mattresses are considered mid-range, they tend to be slightly less expensive than innerspring mattresses. As such, they are the most affordable option on this list. Of course, the type of foam matters: A memory foam mattress may be more expensive than mattresses made with cheaper foam, but still less expensive than other types of mattresses.
Unlike innerspring mattresses, there’s no layer of springs or coils. All-foam mattresses are a very popular option for those who prefer to buy their mattress online, because the nature of foam allows it to be condensed into a box relatively easily.
Apart from affordability, one of the main advantages of an all-foam mattress is that many people find them comfortable. These mattresses tend to have a cloud-like feel that conforms to your body shape. Another advantage is motion-isolation: You can push down on one part of the mattress while the rest of the mattress stays still, which is not the case with an innerspring mattress.
So what’s the catch? The main disadvantage of all-foam mattresses is that they don’t tend to be very long-lasting, and they may start to sag after just a few years.
Latex mattresses are one of the most high-end options. These usually cost between $1,000 and $2,500, but it’s not uncommon to find even more expensive models. Twin mattresses in this category cost an average of $1,100, whereas a queen-size latex mattress costs an average of $2,000.
Latex mattresses are so-called because they are made with latex foam. This is a luxurious material: It contours your body and aligns your spine, and it provides more bounce than traditional memory foam. Because these are considered luxury mattresses, the other materials used to make a latex mattress also tend to be high-quality.
Despite the prevalence of latex allergies, latex mattresses are generally considered safe. For one thing, latex allergies are rare, affecting less than 1% of the population according to the Cleveland Clinic.
What’s more, your body won’t be in direct contact with the latex in these mattresses, and the latex also undergoes a washing process during manufacturing that makes it safer for those with allergies. Most people with latex allergies won’t have a reaction when using a latex mattress. That said, those with severe latex allergies will probably want to avoid these mattresses.
Hybrid mattresses are another high-end option. Their average price is between $1,000 and $3,000 on average, but some are even more expensive. The average cost of a twin hybrid mattress is around $1,150, while the average cost of a queen hybrid mattress is about $2,050, making these mattresses the most expensive option on this list.
Hybrid mattresses get their name from the fact that they are essentially a combination of a foam mattress and an innerspring mattress. A hybrid mattress will usually have several layers of foam on the top, and a layer of springs or coils underneath, giving you the best of both worlds: a soft, cloud-like exterior with all the support and firmness of an innerspring mattress.
Hybrid mattresses are arguably the most luxurious type of mattress on the market. Their unique combination of comfort and support makes them a great option for those who have the budget. But even if you don’t want to spend several thousand dollars, you can actually find hybrid mattresses that won’t break the bank, as we’ll show you in the next section.
Get a Luxury Hybrid at a Fraction of the Price
Our Hush mattress costs only $800 for a twin or $1,200 for a queen, substantially less than average. Finding a hybrid mattress for less than $1,000 is practically unheard-of, but our twin mattress is under $1,000.
That said, don’t let the inexpensive prices fool you: This is a very high-quality mattress on par with the most luxurious hybrid mattresses that usually cost several thousand dollars. Our mattresses have a proprietary cooling foam for the surface layer that uses phase change material, which regulates your temperature and keeps you cool all night long.
Underneath several layers of luxurious foam, our spring layer consists of pocketed coils, rather than the interconnected spring layer common in innerspring mattresses. The advantage of pocketed coils is that they isolate motion, so you won’t feel your dog jumping up on the bed or your partner rolling over in the middle of the night.
What’s more, the pocketed coils offer triple-zoned support. Most mattresses have a tendency to sag in the middle over time, but the construction of our mattresses prevents this, with firmer springs in the middle and gentler springs around the edges. Each part of your body will get the exact amount of support it needs, and the mattress won’t ever sag.
Finally, you’ll be glad to know our mattresses can be purchased online. But you won’t get some mattress that’s been sitting in a box for months: Every Hush mattress that gets ordered is made fresh for you.
Factors That Determine Mattress Price
As we’ve seen, a variety of factors influence the cost of a mattress. In this section, we’ll go into more detail about each of these factors, starting with the main factors and then discussing some additional, optional factors.
The factors listed here will affect everyone buying a new mattress, so it’s a good idea to be familiar with them.
First, the quality of the materials used plays a huge role in the price of the mattress. For instance, memory foam is considered more high-quality than polyfoam, so memory foam mattresses tend to be more expensive than those made of polyfoam. Latex foam is even more expensive, as are many proprietary types of foam made exclusively for specific companies.
When it comes to mattresses with springs, the material used to make the springs will also affect the price of the mattress. Most springs are made of steel alloys, i.e. steel that’s been mixed with cheaper metals, and these tend to be relatively cheap. Springs made of pure steel may be more expensive.
Another major factor affecting the cost of a mattress is its size. Whichever model or brand you choose, the twin mattress will almost always cost about half of what the king-size mattress costs. This makes sense, because a larger mattress uses more material than a smaller one.
Finally, where you buy the mattress also matters. While some people prefer to buy their mattresses in-person at a store where they can test it out before purchasing, doing so is almost always more expensive than buying that same mattress online. Online retailers have fewer overhead costs, so you save money when you purchase online.
The factors listed here won’t necessarily affect you, depending on what you choose to do, but it’s still a good idea to be familiar with all the potential costs of buying a new bed.
First, there may be additional fees on top of the cost of the mattress, such as shipping and handling if you order online or delivery and setup fees if you buy in-person. This is something you’ll want to verify before purchasing your new mattress so it doesn’t come as a surprise. (By the way, we don’t charge any extra for delivery when you order our Hush mattress.)
Another additional cost is warranty. Some mattresses have an optional warranty, but this is an add-on that may not come with the mattress. If you choose to add the warranty, this will make your mattress a little more expensive.
Last but not least, while not technically necessary, you’ll probably want a frame, some pillows, a new set of sheets, and various other accessories to complete your new bed. The costs of these items can add up quickly. Box springs are another additional expense, and they aren’t cheap, but you probably won’t need one if your mattress already includes springs.
Additionally, keep in mind the size of the mattress affects the size of the sheets, and unusual sizes are harder to find sheets for. For instance, it’s more difficult to find twin XL sheets than twin sheets. Likewise, it’s also more difficult to find California king sheets than standard king size sheets. The same is true for the frame, which also has to match the size of the bed.
Sheets and frames of unusual sizes aren’t just harder to find: They also tend to be more expensive. So keep this in mind when choosing the size of your new bed.

To recap, many factors influence the cost of a new mattress, including quality of materials, size, and where it’s bought. You may also end up spending extra on delivery fees or warranties, and you’ll also need to consider what other accessories you want for your new bed: frame, pillows, sheets, etc.
